Two $3.88 Nike graphic tees landed at $15.51 each through Kakobuy once domestic shipping, payment fees and a 0.5 kg minimum freight bracket were counted. We compared that against shipping each tee separately.
Catalog prices are unit prices, not delivered prices. To show how far apart the two are, our testing team sent one Kakobuy order for the same graphic short-sleeve tee twice over — one white L and one black XL, bought from two different sellers — and logged every line item until the box reached our desk in Austin.
Two tees, 19 days, $31.02. That works out to $15.51 per tee against a catalog figure of $3.88. Here is the whole ledger, and the point where the money actually goes.
What the catalog price does not cover
The listing showed two numbers — a $3.88 reference price and a $4.49 secondary figure. We budgeted at the higher one. Neither figure includes domestic shipping inside China, payment processing, or international freight, because all three are billed by the agent at different moments.
First payment: charged when the order is placed
| First payment line | Amount |
|---|---|
| Item price, 2 × tee at $4.49 | $8.98 |
| Domestic shipping to the Kakobuy warehouse, ¥8 per seller | $2.26 |
| Agent service fee, 0% on our account | $0.00 |
| Payment processing, 2.9% | $0.33 |
| Standard QC photo set | $0.00 |
| First payment | $11.57 |
Two things stood out. The service fee line was genuinely zero — Kakobuy markets itself that way and our invoice matched. But domestic shipping was not free: each seller charged ¥8, roughly $1.13, to move one shirt across China. On a sub-$5 item, that domestic leg is a real share of the purchase.
Second payment: consolidated quote versus two separate parcels
Both tees sat in free storage until we requested shipping. Folded, the pair weighed 0.34 kg on our digital scale, and the consolidation invoice billed 0.5 kg — the minimum bracket on the duty-inclusive US line we picked. That minimum is the single most important number in this article. This route also prices volumetric weight as length × width × height ÷ 8000; our 25 × 18 × 6 cm box came to 0.34 kg volumetric against 0.34 kg actual, a wash for soft goods and a problem for anything bulky.
| Second payment line | Consolidated parcel | Two separate parcels |
|---|---|---|
| International freight, 0.5 kg bracket | $18.90 | $37.80 |
| Payment processing, 2.9% | $0.55 | $1.10 |
| Second payment | $19.45 | $38.90 |
One folded cotton tee already fills a 0.5 kg bracket. Adding the second tee changed the weight slightly and the price not at all. Shipping the same two shirts as two parcels paid that minimum twice, for $19.45 in avoidable freight.
Landed cost per tee
| Approach | Total paid | Per tee | Multiple of catalog price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consolidated, one parcel | $31.02 | $15.51 | 4.0× |
| Two separate parcels | $50.47 | $25.24 | 6.5× |
Where the budget usually breaks
- The minimum freight bracket. Tiers on our line start at 0.5 kg, so small hauls pay a fixed floor. Two T-shirts barely cost more to ship than one.
- The currency spread. Kakobuy bills in CNY. A card with no foreign-transaction fee avoided a double conversion; paying in the agent's displayed USD adds a markup that never appears as its own line.
- Duty-inclusive versus standard lines. We chose a route with commercial customs clearance bundled into the freight. The US de minimis exemption no longer applies to sub-$800 parcels, so a standard express line can generate duty or brokerage charges that are not in the quote.
- The storage clock. Free storage is generous, but it is still a clock, and it is measured per item from the day each parcel lands in the warehouse.
What consolidation costs in days
| Stage | Consolidated | Two separate parcels |
|---|---|---|
| Order placed | Day 0 | Day 0 |
| Sellers dispatched | Day 1 | Day 1 |
| Warehouse arrival | Day 3 and Day 5 | Day 3 and Day 5 |
| QC photos posted | +22 hours | +22 hours |
| Shipping requested | Day 6 | Day 3 / Day 5 |
| Dispatched | Day 7 | Day 4 / Day 6 |
| First tracking scan | Day 9 | Day 6 / Day 8 |
| Customs clearance event | Day 14 | Day 11 / Day 13 |
| Delivered to Austin, TX | Day 19 | Day 17 / Day 21 |
The consolidated parcel was two days slower than the first tee shipped alone, because the box waited for the slower seller — and two days faster than the second tee would have arrived on its own. Reading the whole calendar, one parcel is both cheaper and less erratic: one customs event instead of two.
Budget rule from our test: for a two-item T-shirt order, take the catalog price, multiply it by four, and treat that as your per-item estimate. When the catalog price is under $5, the shipping floor dominates everything else.
Verdict
Kakobuy's zero item-level commission is real, and checkout does disclose the payment fee before you commit. What the interface cannot show you is the number that decides the order: your billed weight bracket. Our two-tee test landed at 4.0× the catalog price per shirt, with freight and fees making up almost two-thirds of the total. For landed-cost predictability we rate this order 3.5 / 5 — clean fee disclosure, but a minimum bracket that only appears after consolidation.
